Ishfaq Ahmad wrote that Faiz was a sufi. I agreed then and i agree now, even though every urdu poet pretends/dreams to be a sufi except Kishwar naheed. I just watched "Waris Shah". Its a low budget punjabi film which is over dramatized like most desi movies. As the name suggests its not about Heer Ranjha. its about Waris Shah and director did some research, i think, on the subject and used Heer beautifully. It was very moving. watch it Ghalib in one of his letters wrote that Firdausi was the perfect poet. I have read some of his poetry but i personally feel that Hafiz is out of this world. And i think in the west Rumi has been translated more than any other persian poet. Can any body tell me that is it just me who feels Hafiz more than any one and anything in the world or he really is the greatest.

Hafiz is the poet for poets - and if such honorifics have any meaning, one of the greatest expressions of human experience are in his ghazals. I will check out Ishq da waris.

Ahh, jab aap ne "Haraam" aur Faiz ka topic cherh hi diya hai, I must bring up two lines from one of my favorite pieces of Urdu poetry (Faiz's Subh-e-Azaadi): "Suna hai ho bhi chuka hai firaaq-e-zulmat o noor Suna hai ho bhi chuka hai visaal-e-manzil o gaam Badal chuka hai bahut ahl-e-dard ka dastoor Nishaat-e-vasl halaal, o azaab-e-hijr haraam..."

Ah! I should have remembered that gorgeous verse - for this or my earlier exile post. Incidentally, that "bhi" in Faiz's hands is a dangerous weapon: "Rahaten aur bhi hain vasl ki rahat key siva"

There is something amiss in the 3rd poem - too many syllables in the first verse. I do not have my Hafez handy right now to tell what is it. However, here is another poem from Hafez on the same theme: نه در مسجد گذارندم که مستی نه در میخانه کین خمار خامست میان مسجد و میخانه راهیست غریبم، عاشقم آن ره کدامست؟

safrang | August 29, 2007

yikes. both of my comments above are amiss. i was not reading the first verse of hafez properly, and the second poem is in fact Attar's, albeit rendered in many different forms. nevermind. great poems though, and universal theme.

"sabz sabz mausam ki zard zard aankho main barishon ke doray hain log kitnay koray hain sard sard raton kay surkh surkh honto per gard gard batain hain dosti ki ghatain hain maslehat kay pairon kay saey kitnay gehray hain hum kahan pay aa thehray aaj tak nahin samjhay" Here's an other non sufi, non indian piece of urdu poetry her aik pal ka hisab lay lay magr wo mairay haseen lamhay hisab un ka kabhi na doon ga jo main nay uss nay jo uss nay main nay thay yoon guzaray key teesra darmian nahin tha keh aisay lamhon main tu bhi mera khuda nahin tha jab hum nay apnay lahoo ko apna khuda banaya jab hum nay apnay badan ko apna gawah banaya wo meray apnay haseen lamhay hisab un ka kabha na doon ga
