John Company was not British, it was an English capitalist enterprise, Englishmen came to India with the best of motives, to get rich and eat curry. Silly phrases that one hears or reads such as, "When the British founded Calcutta", etc., are rubbish. The ghats (cutta) of Kali (Cal) were already in place before Parker and his Brahmin wife turned up. Capitalism is infectious, English and French capitalists came to India and now the biggest capitalists in India are capitalist. The Indian mutiny (mutiny because the sepoys were in the pay of John Company and so were mutineers) was a great working class anti-capitalist uprising and should be celebrated as such, the mutineers being the vanguard of Indian socialism, so stop all of this capitalist nationalist rubbish and celebrate the mutiny as a great socialist internationalist historical event.

I wonder how a person kneeling down can put a musket to his chest and try triggering it with his toe. Was that why he was unsuccessful in his attempt to kill himself?

Well....watching the movie was a big disappointment. I wonder why did Ketan Mehta take so much risk in making a film over Mangal Pandey about whom no reasonable information is available. And I would also like to know about this man Mangal Pandey. And was he a true patriot or just a patriot made by accident. I am trying to know more about this man over the net but am disappointed again. I hope you'll help me come out of my disappointment!

Why all this fuss about whether Mangal Pandey was really instrumental in initiating the Sepoy Mutiny or not? To me, the picture has kindled the sleeping patriotic sense of several millions, especially the younger generations and that is a great contrast to the vulgarity, thy name is Indian Cinema.

The book by Mukherjee is based on information in the official British record. The British of course wrote their version in such a way as to not inspire mutiny and added their version of the "truth". Take that into consideration if you read that book.
