I really don’t know what is going on here. or here. or here. or here. or here. or here. or here. or here.

But, I totally know what’s going on here.

Jack Wilkes for LIFE in India, 1945. There are some amazing shots of Jinnah, and perhaps the best visual depiction of the true colonial subaltern: Col. Haynes (L) and Keseri Singh waiting for tiger.

Superb, thanks for posting — especially loved the ones of the women modeling the sari and the “Punjabi dress”, replete with tennis racket…Mumtaz, eat your heart out.

In the same vein, you might find this photo from Egypt (c. 1900-1919) amusing.

It appears to be a step-by-step depiction of how to wrap a sari. Splendid. Just what I need before the wedding!

These are great, especially the sari shots. The LIFE image archive is just about my favorite form of internet procrastination ever.

I may be wrong but I think it is Nayantara Sehgal, daughter of Vijayalakshmi Pundit, showing how to put on a sari. Do a google search by her name and you’ll find her pcitures and bio.
