On one hand, there are children taken hostage. On the other hand, there are children dying of thirst and hunger. I don't think there's any easy way out of this. Found this 2 part video about the Mosque...check it out.

I wouldn't worry about an Islamic Govt coming to power in Pakistan. It seems that India, China and especially the United States have a vested interest in preventing a Pakistani Theocracy. If worse comes to worse, British Airways can give Benazir a first class ticket to Islamabad.

"In fact there is a very popular conspiracy theory that the lal masjid affair has been cooked up or is being manipulated by Musharraf in order to shore up support."
I hinted at that and I hope this post can show that conspiracies notwithstanding the issues between Lal Masjid and the State are deep and contentious.

I also linked to reports from Pakistani media with direct support for Musharraf.

Ultimately, I hope you are right that this dictatorial regime remains in trouble.

I think you are confusing two different things in your analysis. Firstly, though there is widespread support for a crackdown on the lal masjid radicals in the Pakistani news media and blogosphere, there is still a very healthy dose of distrust of and opposition to Musharraf. Lal Masjid may have pushed the CJ issue and APC meeting off the frontpages, but they have certainly not been forgotten.

Secondly, you seem to be equating the debate within American media/officialdom over whether to support or not support Musharraf with the Pakistani media's reporting of this debate. The Pakistani media follows this debate carefully because rightly or wrongly they believe American policy is an important determining factor in what happens domestically in Pakistan. Within Pakistan there is a pretty unanimous consensus within the media that the military must withdraw from politics. In fact there is a very popular conspiracy theory that the lal masjid affair has been cooked up or is being manipulated by Musharraf in order to shore up support.

The editorials in New York and Washington may well change their tone towards Musharraf, but in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, they remain hostile. Ultimately the latter is what counts. The Musharraf regime is still very much in trouble.
