Thanks from this old gringo concerning the present situation in Pakistan. This is really not covered by the media, beyond “some things are happening to some people, blah blah, Musharref, blah blah, the army, blah blah Benazir Bhutto” (photo’s of whom invariably make her look like a hot Mother Teresa with a fashion consultant). I almost feel too ignorant to comment, but if you put what we’re seeing so far with the various color revolutions in eastern europe and eurasia, one sees rat tracks all over the place. My ignorance aside, I would like to submit this eye-opener, even considering the source obviously may have an axe to grind. Read the whole thing - I don’t know what to think of the death of her father, astounding if true.

Hi, I really love your site and the coverage your giving to these important happenings. And the student’s movement is definitely not dying. As a LUMS student i can assure you that there are resistance/oppositional events on campus everyday, from hunger strikes to speeches from the student protestors of the 60s. This is all happening eventhough there are finals going on!

I hear you. Ever since the Great Emo Demonstrations in November 2000 failed to convince the Supreme Court in DC, I have been skeptical of all such protests as well. Having said that, the kid in the upper left CUREish hair is totally going to his band practice after this is over.

’tis great to hear of school children protesting like this, though i have mixed feelings about the lathi-charging. i mean how would i feel if my own teenage children were attacked by rabid ~~dogs~~ coppers? (now if only the spirit of protest were to filter it’s way up [sic] the social ladder to teenagers from lesser funded educational institutions.)

pardon the knee-jerk cynicsm, but i can’t get it out out of my head that the group shown in the top picture look like members of a recently formed pop/disco/fusion/dance/elektro-phunk/rap/performance-art band preparing to perform in the vicinity of the foothills of the karakoram.

and you’re right about the chairperson-for-life of the pee-pee party: she is to ms suu kyi what jayalalitha is to mother teresa. or what andre nel is to muttiah muralitharan. (maybe somebody else might come up with a better analogy.)

Amazing footage & eyewitness account… I agree with your comments: this newborn civic participation that we are seeing is exactly what Pakistan has been thirsting for for decades. It is limiting the political maneouvering of current politicians and will hopefully strengthen and persist for long enough to bring a more participatory dynamic and active focus on substantive issues and actions in Pakistani society.

Also, from a newcomer - great site!
