For those who read the past in the light of the present, the Khilafat Movement may look to be a quixotic movement. For they less understand that the concept of nationlism was not well founded then and that the by-products of the Khilafat Movement - the rise of Gandhi as an all-India leader and the transfermation of Congress in to a mass movement - really led to Indian independence. This factor should be borne in mind before commenting on Khilafat Movement.
